Wedding Photography That Feels Like You

Here for the Laughs, Happy Tears & Everything In Between

A Little About Me…JB

Hi, I’m JB — and for over 20 years, I’ve had the great privilege of photographing weddings,

elopements, and proposals throughout Airlie Beach and the Whitsundays.

You could probably call me an old romantic, but here’s something incredibly special about a wedding day:

the anticipation, the nerves, the laughter, and the quiet moments in between when everything suddenly feels real.

Two people choosing each other, surrounded by the people and places that matter most. It never gets old.

Over the years, I’ve photographed countless couples as they’ve promised forever,

and it’s something I treat with genuine care and respect.

  • A Calm Presence on One of the Most Important Days of Your Life

My approach to photography is simple: if you’re relaxed and enjoying your day, your photos will reflect that.

I keep the posing to a minimum and the genuine moments front and centre.

I’m not there to direct or interrupt your experience — I’m there to quietly document it as it unfolds.

The real laughs, the emotion, the connection, and the moments you didn’t even realise were happening.

Whether you’re planning a full wedding, an intimate elopement, or a surprise proposal, my goal is always the same: to tell your story honestly and beautifully.

  • Experience You Can Trust

I’ve lived and worked in the Whitsundays for over 120 years, photographing weddings across Airlie Beach, island resorts, remote beaches, and iconic locations throughout the region.

That local knowledge matters. Knowing the light, the tides, the seasons, and how a day flows allows me to anticipate moments before they happen and adapt calmly when plans change.

It also means I can help guide you — with real, practical advice — when it comes to timelines, locations, and how to get the most out of your day.

Throughout my career, my work has been recognised with numerous awards, including Queensland Travel Photographer of the Year and a Master of Photography accreditation from the Australian Institute of Professional Photographers.

My images have also been featured nationally in publications such as Harper’s Bazaar and Hello May.

While those achievements are meaningful, what matters most to me is the trust my couples place in me — and the stories we create together.

  • More Than Photos — A Feeling Preserved

Long after the day is over, your photographs are what remain.

They’re the way you’ll remember how it felt — the nerves before the ceremony, the way you looked at each other, the atmosphere of the place you chose, and the joy of celebrating with the people you love.

That’s why I approach every wedding, elopement, and proposal with intention.

Not chasing trends. Not staging moments. Just honest, timeless imagery that still feels true years down the track.

My Photographic Journey

For as long as I can remember, I have always been interested in design, art, construction and the aesthetics of the combination of these two elements.

Straight out of school, I spent several years training in the fashion industry, which was the perfect marriage of my guiding interests.

For me, the fashion industry at its core is all about design and construction.

Whilst at college, we learnt daily the principles and fundamentals of design, like shape, colour and texture and then at night, I would rush home to design and construct garments using these principles.

To be honest, I have never worked a single day employed in the fashion industry, as I found at heart the “ruthlessness” of this world didn’t sit well with my personality…I was only 20 years old at the time.

So I did what every 20-something does…I went travelling.

Whilst travelling a found that I had a passion and an eye for photography.

London was also the place where I acquired the managerial skills that would set me on my future professional path.

Photography indulged and balanced the creative and aesthetic side of my personality with my desire to travel and see new horizons.

I spent quite a few years living in London, and this is where I started to manage my first small business.

Also, whilst in London, I started my journey into website design or what was then known as “Multimedia”.

This is where I began learning programs like Adobe Photoshop & Lightroom, Dreamweaver, Flash and Illustrator, which would become the tools of my trade over the next few decades.

After returning from my travels overseas, I found myself living and working on Hamilton Island.

Yes, it’s a tough job living in paradise, but someone’s gotta do it.

Why Hamilton Island, you ask?… Well, at the time, pretty much my whole family were living and working on Hamilton Island, and because I had lived apart from my family for so long, it was for me the place I needed to be.

Whilst living on the island, my passion for photography was rekindled as I restarted my career as a professional photographer.

Over the years, I have photographed everything from newlyweds to real estate, celebrities to newborns and pretty much everything in between.

I lived and worked on Hamilton Island for an amazing 18 years, where I became the Manager of Hamilton Island Photography.

Nowadays, I live in Airlie Beach, and I run my own businesses, JB Photography & Illuminate Web Design.

I still love to combine my passion for photography and travel, and I try to holiday every year in a 2004 Troopy, where I like nothing better than immersing myself in the local environment, always on the lookout for interesting and unusual images and scenes to capture.

It was also this passion that helped me to achieve my “Master’s in Photography” several years ago, and I regularly compete in national photographic competitions and have had quite a few successes in a variety of photography competitions.

Not to be one to let the grass grow under my feet, I have also, during my time on Hamilton Island, indulged my passion for Website Design and Development.

Freelancing my Website Design business brings all of my life skills to focus in one place.

It allows me to create and develop strong “One on One” business and personal relationships whilst combining my passions for design and construction, aesthetics and photography.

Well, that’s pretty much all about me, without me waffling on too much.
